If you have the Epic Pass, you get access to all 10 resorts in Hakuba Valley.

Today, I decided to try Happo One and BOY… it was NOT fun today hahaha. You just literally hear people scraping on ice EVERYWHERE.

It was so stressful that I decided to call it quits around lunch lol. The bad part about Hakuba in my opinion is if you want to take the free bus, they only come at certain times.

The next bus wasn’t going to be for about 2 hours and I didn’t want to wait around so I decided to just walk back. Luckily, Happo One isn’t too far from Echoland. It was about a 25-minute walk for me. This walk would be impossible from Hakuba 47.

Since my accommodations has no kitchen, I pretty much had to figure out dinner every night. I Googled some places and landed on this okonomiyaki place.

The place is called B.O.S. and is at the very edge of Echoland. I got there at 4:50 pm (it opens at 5:00 pm) and there was only one other person in line. The restaurant filled up by 5:30 pm and by the time I left, there was a long queue outside.

Just warning though, they do require you to buy a drink (alcoholic or non-alcoholic). I wish I could have just bought water but it wasn’t an option so I settled for good old apple juice lol.

Before everyone gets their panties in a bunch… I absolutely know that you don’t ride for free in Hakuba since the Epic Pass costs $1000+.

I did not buy the Epic Pass for Hakuba. I bought it for all the pricey U.S. resorts. Hakuba was just a bonus so that’s why in my mind it’s free 🙂

Okay now we got that out of the way, Hakuba 47 is actually connected to Goryu so you get two resorts in one.

To be honest, I liked Goryu side better. I think the runs are more fun but if you like the park then Hakuba 47 is your better choice.

Also, yes, I did eat Subway hahaha. To be honest, it was pretty delicious and it was so cheap for a mountain lunch!

Everything else was coming in at around ¥2000 but a 6-inch Subway sandwich was only ¥600! Like it would be criminal if I didn’t at least try it out, right?

I decided to splurge and ended up getting the spicy teriyaki for ¥650. The best part was that the sandwich was actually spicy! I have no regrets about my choice lol.

I saw these cute doggies on the Paradise run all day. Man… if I had a dog I would definitely bring them here 😍

Day 27 - Snowboarding Around the World Trip

Yes, sadly we are leaving Nozawa Onsen today. It was an unbelievable week and made so many core memories.

But now it’s time to move onto our next resort which is the famous Hakuba! In hindsight, I could have routed my resorts a little better but there were changes that I couldn’t really adjust.

In the end, the traveling wasn’t bad at all especially when taking the bus. I always get so stressed about if there’s room for my snowboard bag on the train. When you take the was though, they have storage underneath which takes the stress off.

If anyone is curious about my route and want to do the same, please refer to the below:
1) Nozawa Onsen Bus Liner > IIyama Station (Bus ¥600)
2) Iiyama Station > Nagano Station (Local train ¥590)
3) Nagano Station > Hakuba Happo Bus Station (Bus ¥3500)
✨Total: ¥4690 ($31 USD)✨

The place I stayed at was Pension Syo and I loved it there. It’s close to Echoland (the main commercial street) and the ski bus stops right out in front. I paid about $351 for 5 nights so about $70/night.

I originally booked a triple room+shared bathroom because that’s all they had at the time. The owner probably noticed it was only me and switched my room which worked out for since now I have my own private bathroom!

Regarding the stink bug comment, if you watched my Nozawa Onsen reels, there were stink bugs in my room and they would find their way in every day! I guess they really like the heat.

So, having my own bathroom and no sting bugs was really luxury for me 😂

It’s my last day in Nozawa Onsen! I can’t believe a week flew by so fast. Had such an amazing time there and couldn’t believe what a great town that was.

It was one of those places that really exceeded my expectations. Everything was great except the sting bug situation. If there was a way to guarantee that there would be no bugs in your room, this place would have been 10/10 lol.

Time to move on to Hakuba! 🏂

Have you heard of Nozawa Onsen?! It’s not as popular as Niseko or Hakuba and that’s probably why I love it!

I first heard about it because of the big annual fire festival it has every year but after I visited, I truly think it’s a great all-around mountain to spend your ski vacation.

Even if you don’t ski or snowboard, the town has a lot of other activities for you to do like stamp collecting, bathing at one of the 13 free bath houses, making onsen tamago, do a gin tasting, etc.

The best part, a 4-day lift ticket only cost me abound $43/day! Unheard of back in the states!

Day 25 - Snowboarding Around the World Trip

Today was a day well spent roaming. Around Nozawa Onsen and really getting to explore the town.

I tried another onsen bath house this time and even got the courage to go cook my own onsen tamago!

I’ve already heard about that and tried them in Japanese buffets but I’ve never actually cooked them myself. Also, it’s not like there are onsens back in the states either.

So, I had some leftover eggs from breakfast so I thought would take them with me to the onsen. I first had to buy a tamago net at the supermarket which only cost me ¥33 (.22 cents USD).

Out of the free 13 onsens in town, 2 of them have tamago boxes out in front where you can cook your eggs.

The eggs takes roughly 20 mins to cook which gives you enough time to take a quick onsen dip while you wait for your eggs.

I took them back to my accommodations and it came out pretty good! The white part was a little runny but the yolk was perfect up until I dropped it lol.

My next snack adventure was getting the famous okayi which is a steamed bun with either savory or sweet fillings in side. They only cost ¥300 and the popular ones are outside the Haus St. Anton building.

After that, I decided to head on over to the Nozawa Onsen Gin Distillery. I’m not a gin fan but I’m always down to try something new. I got the basic gin tasting which was only ¥1,000 ($6.50 USD).

This was such a good deal for 4 gins, soda water, and ice. There were other cocktails and other gins that you can try if you wanted to drink more.

Totally wasn’t planning on snowboarding today but when the mountain is calling, you have to answer!

It ended up being the best day this season so far for me so I was glad I decided to go up.

I even had lunch on the mountain today and Hakugin which is a small little restaurant on the side of the mountain.

The food prices were super affordable and that made me so happy! I got curry rice and it was only ¥1000 ($6.50 USD).

After the slopes, I finally got the nerve to go to a public onsen. I’ve done onsens before in ryokans or hotels, but never one that’s just open to the public.

I was also told that they pre-shower differently in Nozawa Onsen. Usually, there’s always a shower station + stool for you to shower/rinse off before you enter the onsen.

In Nozawa Onsen, you actually sit on the side of the onsen, and you use a bucket to scoop the onsen water to wash yourself off and that water gets drained off to the side.

It was a little intimidating at first but after reading the instructions a million times and pretty much just comping the locals, I was a pro by the end.

For dinner, I was craving noodles and unfortunately I didn’t have any reservations. So I researched a place that took no reservations and landed at this popular soba restaurant called Sobadokoro Daimon.

The restaurant is only open for dinner and there was a line 8 people deep when we got there around 7:00 pm.

We had to wait probably around 30 mins or so but I think it was well worth it. The prices for the soba were very affordable too!

I got the cold soba with a boiled egg for ¥1050 ($7 USD). For being in a ski town, I thought that was a steal. The portion was huge too. Definitely recommend!

Day 23 - Snowboarding Around the World

Today is my second day up at Nozawa Onsen! Last’s night fire festival was amazing and it continued to snow all night.

In the morning, the clouds parted ways and we were left with the most amazing snow covered trees and blue skies.

It was definitely one of the those days where you kept wanting to stop and take pictures. Everything was covered with fresh snow and it was truly one of the most beautiful days yet of the season for me.

Since I didn’t have a lot of time to explore yesterday, I spent most of the day exploring the mountain and getting my bearings.

For Nozawa Onsen lift ticket prices, I bought a 4-day pass which costs ¥25,900 but since I used a credit card, they had to add an extra fee which came out to ¥26,418.

It hit my credit card at exactly $168.16 which comes out to about $42.02/day. Isn’t that crazy??? You would NEVER find anything like that in the U.S.!

Even if you want to buy a one-day lift ticket, it currently only costs ¥7,300 which is about $48 USD!

Day 22 - Snowboarding Around the World Trip

Today was my first day up the mountain and it was fantastic! I love when it snows all day so you always have fresh powder.

Yes, the visibility does suck but there’s nothing like riding in fresh pow!

I didn’t stay on the mountain as long as I could have because tonight is the famous Nozawa Onsen Dosojin Fire Festival.

It’s one of the three great fire festivals in Japan and my timing worked out where I was able to fly from Finland to Japan to make on time for the festival.

The Nozawa Onsen Dosojin Fire Feetival is held every January 15th. If you want to attend, you HAVE to stay in Nozawa Onsen. You can’t stay in a neighboring city or drive in. This is because your accommodations will give you a ticket for the festival.

The festival lasts from 7:00pm-10:45pm or so. They start burning the shrine at 10:00pm but it took probably 15 minutes before it finally lit on fire.
