I’m excited to share with you my 2021 Ultimate Guide to Luxury Shopping in Hawaii! I wrote a blog post like this back in 2018 on my former website and thought I would write an updated version on my new site here. For my readers that don’t know, Hawaii has special discounts on luxury brands that aren’t available anywhere else in the world. A sales associate once tried to explain to me that it’s because luxury retailers combine Hawaii and Guam into their own special pricing zone since they don’t really fall within the Mainland U.S. or Mainland Asia. I’ve never researched it further, but one day I would love to know the whole story of why this is. As for now, I’m just going to keep on shopping!
The Ultimate Guide to Luxury Shopping in Hawaii
This post will be an overall cheat sheet in alphabetical order of all the stores that I researched based on my recent trip to Oahu this past February. You’ll notice that I made a separate full blog post for some of the stores which I linked down below. I didn’t have the time to do a detailed blog post for each store, but I’ve at least spoken to a sales associate who has confirmed what the discount was (if any) for each store. As always, I would double-check with each store regarding their discount before you purchase. I know some of the stores I mentioned below do change their pricing once in a while. Lastly, although all the stores I listed below are on the Waikiki strip, you will still get the same discount at the Ala Moana Center if you choose to shop there instead. If you have any questions about luxury shopping in Hawaii, feel free to ask in the comment section below. Hope this helps!

Is this only true in Oahu or the other islands as well? Going to Maui and Kauai in May and planning on purchasing my first luxury bag.
Luxury Lowdown
To my knowledge, it’s supposed to be true for all of the island since Hawaii has their own pricing system. With that being said, Maui and Kauai does not have the same amount of luxury stores that Oahu does so I would definitely check first if they have the brand you’re looking for.
Or you can always take a inter-island flight and fly over to Oahu for the day to go shopping. I think Southwest always has flights for like $39 one way 😉

Hello! Do you know if the same discounts apply in department stores such as saks or Nordstrom?
Thank you!
Luxury Lowdown
Hi! That’s a good question but unfortunately I don’t know. I only assume they don’t since while I was at Balenciaga, I overheard one of the other customers saying that he was at Saks or Nordstrom and they told him to come check out the Balenciaga store because they had better discounts and inventory. I would definitely try to give the department stores a ring and ask to be sure!

Do you know about the pricing for VCA? I saw a review on google saying it’s duty free store.
Luxury Lowdown
Hi Halie! Unfortunately, I believe the T Galleria by DFS is indefinitely close. I believe the only store that’s open in that mall right now is Dior.

Hi! I’ve been to Hawaii this year and didn’t think to purchase anything! Do you think it would still be cheaper to buy in Hawaii with lower sales tax vs. Buying it in Oregon which has no sales tax? Curious of your thoughts. Thank you!
Luxury Lowdown
I actually get this question a lot and it’s a very good one! The answer is… it depends on the brand and item!
Dior is definitely better in Waikiki because their store is located in a duty free mall so there’s no tax there plus you get the special Hawaii pricing.
Some items like Chanel bags will do better in Portland since there’s no Hawaii special benefit except the lower 4% tax. Since Portland has 0% tax, it would be better to buy Chanel bags there. With that being said, it all comes down to inventory. I’ve been to the Chanel in Portland and the stock is very limited compared to Waikiki.
Now, it you live in Portland, you probably have the best of both worlds. It’s my understanding that if you buy something in Hawaii and have it mailed to your address in Portland, they will charge you 0% tax! So, for people who live in a city or state with 0% sales tax, you probably have the biggest advantage since you can shop at any store in Hawaii and get your 0% tax as long as it’s shipped to your home address (no P.O. boxes).

Any knowledge of Rimowa or Moncler? Two years ago both were 10% but love to know now… thx!

Hi do you know if Loewe has HI pricing? Thanks!
Luxury Lowdown
I actually do not unfortunately. Try giving the store a call though. They usually will tell you.
Kim
Hi! Do you know if Rimowa has any discount?
Luxury Lowdown
No, unfortunately not. I’ve checked lol.
